Painted on the wall, the words ‘Soppaa, saippuaa, sielunhoitoa’ (Soup, soap, salvation) are a fitting motto for the exhibition showcasing the Salvation Army’s 120-plus years in Finland. Fascinating items from magic lanterns to workers’ uniforms and the undeniably genuine Christmas kettle shed light on the history of the organisation.
Nostalgic photographs and beautiful arrangements of items evoke memories and tell tales of the everyday work of Salvation Army officials. The Sunday school sandbox, bark dolls brought home from mission trips and many other items tell us about the work done among children, the poor and substance abusers.
From the outset, music has been an integral part of the Salvation Army’s operations. The museum exhibits an impressive collection of instruments from various wind instruments to a late 19th century drum from London and the nearly forgotten ‘troll bells’.
