“Architecture is an art that cannot be created in an office-like environment,” Alvar Aalto once said. In 1955-56, he designed a studio in Munkkiniemi, not far from his home, creating an inspirational environment for his team of architects.
Alvar Aalto managed his architectural firm until his passing in 1976, after which the office continued to operate under the leadership of Elissa Aalto until 1994.
A visit to Studio Aalto is a fascinating immersion into the world of Aalto’s architecture, design and personal history, but at the same time it is an architectural experience of space and the building itself. Bathed in natural light and decorated with Aalto furniture, this unique studio was the setting where Aalto and his architects designed a number of famous buildings.
A museum shop with a selection of design products and Aalto-themed literature is open during guided tours.
Alvar Aalto Museum has a total of four museum locations open to the public in Jyväskylä and Helsinki.
