The main theme of the museum is the Porkkala leased territory 1944-1956, at which time the Porkkala area, with Degerby and parts of Siuntio and Kirkkonummi, was leased to to the Soviet Union as a navy base. Degerby village council initiated the museum in 1997. In 2002, the museum was moved to its current location in the centre of Degerby village, now having two buildings available for its use.

At Degerby Igor Museum, one can see both photos and items designed to give the visitor a good view of what it was like before, during and after the occupation. In recent years, the perspective has been widened to include events in Karelia and the Baltics. Most of the items on display were found in the area, left behind by the Russians.

One of the museum buildings, Rosenberg, is also the village office and contains a small shop with handicrafts and other items relating to Degeby.
