Porvoo Museum’s Holm House offers a glimpse into the home and life of a wealthy Porvoo merchant in the 18th century.
After the Great Fire of Porvoo, which occurred in summer 1760, some of the town’s wealthy burghers – including Johan Holm (senior) – built their new houses of bricks. Holm House originally had a mansard roof and courtyard entrance. Business was conducted downstairs and the family lived upstairs. In the 19th century, the building housed bakers and Swiss confectioners. A new door was built on the square side of the building for the operation of the bakery.
The second floor of the building, the Holm family home, features the drawing room, salon, gentlemen’s club room, bedroom and kitchen. The rooms are furnished in the style of the times. Museum guests are brought into the right mood by scents and sounds. The exhibitions are also enlivened by dolls dressed in outfits typical of the era.
In addition to Holm House, the same courtyard features two smaller residential buildings and a number of outbuildings.
