The collector of folklore and the compiler of Kalevala, Elias Lönnrot (1802-1884) was born in Paikkari Cottage in the village of Haarjärvi. It was built around the year 1800 in the grounds of Paikkari military residence by his father, who was a tailor. The cottage was acquired by the state in 1889.
The house consists of a living room, which is the oldest part of the building, a porch and a chamber, both of which were added a few years later. Elias Lönnrot’s cradle and his black kantele are on display in the living room. The chamber also contains items that Lönnrot used, such as an inkstand, a shelf for manuscripts and a bookshelf.
Themed guide tours are available for Paikkari Cottage by prior arrangement.
