In the corner of Lapinlahdenkatu Street and Eerikinkatu Street, in central Helsinki, is a living pharmacy museum! On the ground floor of an attractive art nouveau style house is the Joutsen Pharmacy, which has retained its original interior since it opened in 1912.
Customers are still served in the same art nouveau style surroundings as they were a hundred years ago. You can sit on the leather couches of the waiting area and admire the interior that is now listed. It is also worthwhile to inspect the leaded glass work by Hugo Backmansson depicting the emblem bird of the pharmacy.
The downstairs museum exhibits the history of the Joutsen Pharmacy and the entire pharmaceutical establishment. Different utility objects, tools and drug packagings create a good overview of the changes in pharmacy work. Ancient drugs and dried medicinal plants and their associated beliefs are also unveiled on a tour around the museum.
Groups and individuals are welcome to visit the downstairs museum on appointment.
