Writer Johannes Linnankoski (Vihtori Peltonen) was born in Askola on 18 October 1869. Around the time of Vihtori’s birth, his parents were renting Maria Peltonen’s home farm in Askola, but when he was young, the family built a new house named Niemenpelto. Today, this building serves as the Linnankoski museum.
While the majority of the furnishings originate from the village of Vakkola, some of the items on display actually belonged to Linnankoski. Some of Linnankoski’s writings and photographs are also displayed. Linnankoski was employed by, for example, Werner Söderström’s publishing house and as a reporter for the Uusimaa newspaper. His career as an author began in 1903, and his best-known work is The Song of the Blood-Red Flower (Laulu tulipunaisesta kukasta), which was also made into a film.
During his short life, Linnankoski travelled around Finland with his family, but he returned to Askola in 1909 and died there on 10 August 1913.
