The museum was built by war veterans in Lappohja, which is where the front line crossed Hanko peninsula during the war. The front line in the summer of 1941 was in the exact location where the front line museum now stands. The aim of the museum exhibitions is to deepen the knowledge of the Finnish struggle during 1939-1945, and of other historical eras. The artillery, with associated artefacts, is shown in an artillery magazine.

Situated in the Front Museum grounds, the dugout Kultainen Rauha (“Golden Peace”) is a reconstruction of a dugout which was in the same location during the war. The dugout is owned by Hanko Museum. The front museum was founded in 1981.
