The Hindersby-Bäckby Village Forge consists of the actual smithy, farrier’s shop and tinsmithy. The smithy and its tools were used by smiths in three generations of the same family for almost a century.
The smith was a very important person in an agricultural community. Without him and his forge, no agricultural work would have been possible, as the smith made everything that had iron in it. Although most tools were made of wood, they had to be reinforced with iron. Wheels and sledges required iron and horses needed shoes. Even the first farming machinery was built and repaired by the smith. In those days, farms did not have their own workshops, so the smith also helped farmers to repair their equipment or even invent new tools.
