The Archipelago Museum is a special museum showcasing the cultural history of the archipelago.
The permanent exhibition in the museum’s basement covers the settlement of the archipelago and how it was possible to accommodate agriculture with the maritime culture. In addition to basic means of livelihood in the archipelago, such as seal hunting, fishing and bird hunting, the exhibition also presents coastal navigation and pilotage. However, the underlying theme of everything is the boat, the primary tool and means of transport for islanders.
The permanent exhibition on the upper floor deals with boats and boat building. There are examples of different wooden boat types. The exhibition also familiarises visitors with boat building techniques: the lap joint and flush joint methods are thoroughly illustrated. The adjacent building houses boat engines and an exhibition on pleasure boating.
