Visitors of the Design Museum are treated to a voyage in the world of Finnish design from its history all the way to contemporary themes. In Finland, in the late 19th century, the industrial revolution gave birth to industrial design. The exhibition provides a view into various periods and trends through unique pieces and everyday utensils.
The hiking axe, lumberjack boots and shampoo bottle all require a design that fits the purpose of the object. From Art Nouveau furniture to a Solifer moped, and all the way to colourful printed textiles, the exhibition has it all. There are also prototypes and sketches depicting various stages of the design process.
Functional peeking boxes encourage visitors to design a necklace, select a pattern for a unicolor mug or listen to the same music from India that long ago inspired Maija Isola to design patterns for Marimekko.
The multi-dimensional exhibition includes design classics from a motor oil canister by Stefan Lindfors all the way to a unique dress by Paola Suhonen that was featured at the Paris Fashion Week.
The museum provides guided tours, events and workshops. The facilities also include a Design Shop and a cosy café.
