Take a peek into the life of working-class children of the past in Sörnäinen, Helsinki! Located in an atmospheric Art Nouveau building, children may don an apron or work coat at the museum, and take a playful step into the everyday life of a working class district child.
At the museum, you can shine shoes, get busy at the carpentry workshop or play with building blocks. A large chest of drawers hides a variety of interesting toys. The museum also has a real playhouse and a tepee where you can go to listen to a fairy tale.
While the experiential museum is aimed at children particularly, it also offers adults an interesting perspective on kindergarten work in the 20th century. Headed by Finnish pioneers in the field, Hanna Rothman and Elisabeth Alander, the house took care of children and trained kindergarten teachers-to-be for decades.
Today’s children get to play with nearly all of the items in the activity-oriented museum.
