The Viapori surrenderer’s home, ghost manor, rice field and baroque garden!
A medieval House of Nobility, Herttoniemi Manor is the site of numerous fascinating stories. It saw the establishment of Finland’s first porcelain factory in the latter half of the 18th century. Known as the surrenderer of the Viapori fortress, Carl Olof Cronstedt transformed the factory into a two-storey manor early in the next century.
Upstairs, the life of the Cronstedt family comes alive in paintings and in the Gustavian furniture that belonged to the family. The burgher home of the Bergbom family, who lived in the house in the late 19th and early 20th century, has been furnished downstairs. The colourful history of the area lives on in several ghost stories related to the place.
Surrounding the Manor House Museum is one of Finland’s finest baroque gardens. The gazebos in the park were designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, who created the Empire milieu of Helsinki’s Senate Square.
The adjacent farm steward’s house hosts Restaurant Wanha Mylly.
