The Ateneum Art Museum in the heart of Helsinki is the Finnish National Gallery, where visitors are able to admire popular classics and fascinating temporary exhibitions. The museum’s collections include works by Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Helene Schjerfbeck and Hugo Simberg.
The Neo-Renaissance building, located next to the Rautatientori Square, designed by architect Theodor Höijer is a sight to behold itself. The permanent exhibition on the third floor contains the works of Finnish masters from as early as the 1750s. The museum also contains smaller exhibitions related to the permanent collection, as well as international art.
Ateneum also provides audio guides for a selection of pieces in Finnish, Swedish and English, as well as in plain language and different dialects of Finnish. Museum visits are enlivened by a variety of events, guidance and workshops.
