Agricultural Museum Pair

Horse-drawn carriages, scythes and iron-tipped wooden shovels were part of the daily routine at farmhouses until the early 1900s. As the 20th century went on, the use of machines in the countryside increased and farms began using tractors, threshers and other new agricultural equipment in place of horse-drawn ploughs.

Vantaa Agricultural Museum and Helsinki Rural Municipality Museum illustrate the agrarian traditions of the areas of Helsinki rural municipality, which are now part of Vantaa.

While the majority of the people were farmers, many also worked other trades either as their primary occupation or to earn additional income. Craftsmen like carpenters and cobblers were common in the countryside, and the two museums in the agricultural pair feature many fascinating examples of their work and the tools of their trade.
